What did "publishing" and "Arabic Literature" entail in the period of Classical Islam? How were ideas transmitted, both aurally and in written form?

Following a chronological line, the author begins by exploring the ways in which texts were published in the early Islamic period: official documents were written and placed in a shrine; poetry was passed on orally and aurally, through recitations, supported by rough notes to assist in the transmission. He goes on to consider the Qur'an as it became an official written document, thereby reducing the role of the Qur'anic readers who recited the text.

Further chapters consider the earliest days of Islamic religious sciences, with the systematic collection of information about the life of the Prophet and his companions, and the beginnings of "academic teaching" and "school literature," again with knowledge being transmitted via a combination of written texts and recitation. The court's role in the development and transmission of Arabic literature, including translations and adaptations of works from other languages is also explored, along with the influence of other cultures on knowledge transmission.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A review such as this cannot do justice to the wealth of detail and useful insights contained in this book and readers are strongly recommended to read it for themselves....--the present work is clearly an important contribution to the necessary task of appreciating the co-existence and interplay of the oral and the written in early Islamic culture and how expectations about the one should not allow us to mistake or misunderstand the other. -- Yasin Dutton, University of Cape Town ― Journal of Islamic Studies

The Genesis of Literature in IslamFrom the Aural to the ReadGregor SchoelerRevised edition in collaboration with and translated by Shawkat M. ToorawaIn the beginning was the Qur'an, the first book of Islam and also the firstbook of Arabic literature. Occasioned by the need to understand andinterpret the word of God, and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad,Muslims made an inventory and study of their tradition. This involved thecollection, transmission and instruction of the sacred text, of the words anddeeds of Muhammad, and also of poetry, from both before and after the rise of Islam-indeed of all matters regarded as pertinent tothe proper and scholarly study of the tradition. This activity, which began in the last third of the seventh century, reliedpredominantly on aural study with a master, that is, on oral communicationbetween teacher and student, although writing was already an integral partof this process. In the present work Gregor Schoeler explains how Muslim scholarship evolved from aural to read. The result was the genesis of one of the richest literatures of late antiquity and the early middle ages, as is clear from the widespread dissemination of scholarship through writing and the attendant proliferation of books.Gregor Schoeler is Professor and Chair of Islamic Studies in the Orientalisches Seminar at the University of Basel. His many publications include The Oral and the Written in Early Islam (2006).Shawkat M. Toorawa is Associate Professor of Arabic Literature and Islamic Studies at Cornell University. He is the author of Ibn Abi Tahir Tayfur and Arabic Writerly Culture (2005).
